Top Reasons Why Resumes Are Rejected | Becareful For Your Resume

This is probably the main reason hiring managers reject resumes, and it's a bit of a no-brainer, isn't it? "Underqualified" is a polite way of saying, "You don't have the skills to do this job." Yet this doesn't stop lots of people.

A friend of mine says that when she worked at a large pharmaceutical firm, they sent out an ad looking for a medical researcher/writer. They received about 60 responses, many from people with no related experience whatsoever. Her favourite response was from a young man whose only experience consisted entirely of mowing lawns and teaching skiing! Yes, he would have been the perfect medical researcher. Talk about optimism!

So why would anyone apply for a job they don't have the skills or education to do?

The "Dartboard" strategy - Some people decide that they'll send out masses of resumes, much like someone might close their eyes and throw a big handful of darts at a dartboard. They figure surely one of them is bound to hit the target. So they email resumes to online job banks indiscriminately, regardless of the qualifications for the job, hoping they'll luck out and get selected for an interview. Does this work? Not usually.
Optimism -Some people figure that although they don't have the skills, experience or education required by a particular job, that they're such quick learners, and so energetic and motivated, that they could pick the job up in no time. As a result, they submit applications, not for jobs they're qualified for, but for jobs they'd just really like to do. Does this work? Not usually.
They didn't read the small print - Job ads, whether online or in the newspaper, are usually very detailed and specific in regards to exactly what qualifications the employer is looking for. Reading the ads takes time, though. People will commonly rush through an ad, then fire off a resume, missing the part of the ad that says, "Fluent Spanish essential" or "Must have MBA."
Impatience -Some people want to skip over the boring entry-level stuff and get right to the jobs with the great pay, perks and benefits, without having to slog through boring courses and putting in time in the trenches. Who wouldn't? Does it work? Not usually, unless the employer is your father.
Why do hiring managers usually reject underqualified applicants?

Because they're underqualified! They don't have the skills for the job! (It isn't that complicated.)
Because if someone can't read a job ad well enough to discover only welders need apply, or that the job requires 15 years experience, the hiring manager isn't going to waste his time reading the rest of the resume.
Because no matter how motivated or clever you are, the employer doesn't usually have the time or resources to spend teaching you things that 20 of the other applicants already know.
